Remodeling Kitchen Cabinets

If you want to dramatically change the look of your kitchen, the best way to do it is by remodeling kitchen cabinets. After all, the cabinets take up the most space, so their appearance dominates a large portion of your kitchen’s color and style. Unfortunately, in addition to having a big impact, remodeling kitchen cabinets is also very expensive. Today, we’re going to discuss a variety of topics related to remodeling kitchen cabinets including inexpensive ways to update your cabinets, what to expect from a full-on cabinet remodel, and special features you might consider adding to your new kitchen cabinets.

So you’re remodeling kitchen cabinets on a budget . . .

If you despise your cabinets but you’re on a tight budget, don’t worry—there are ways to update the look of your cabinets without emptying your bank account. First, paint the cabinets a new color. With a fresh coat of paint that complements the rest of your kitchen, your cabinets won’t look so outdated and unattractive. Second, replace the hardware. Knobs and pulls aren’t expensive and they’re easy to replace. Choose some stylish hardware that matches your fresh new paint color.

Voila! Your cabinets should be looking better already. And maybe several years from now, when you’re better able to afford it, completely remodeling kitchen cabinets will be a possibility.

So you want to rip your cabinets out and start from scratch . . .

First, you’ll need to find a talented, experienced, and reliable contractor. This is not a basic DIY project. Considering all of the measurements, the cost of tools, and the need for each piece to be completely level, you would be well advised not to tackle this project yourself. Next, realize that this is a large investment. Of course the price will vary based on the size of your kitchen, your desired style/brand, and whether you want standard or custom cabinets, but overall, cabinets are expensive. Take your time and try to choose a neutral, classic cabinet that will add value to the home. Finally, if your cabinets are strong and in good condition (but simply ugly), consider refacing them instead of completely replacing them. This will dramatically reduce the final cost.

So you want to make your cabinets awesome . . .

If you’re remodeling kitchen cabinets from the ground up, why not ask your contractor to install some cool, functional tools within the structure? Here are some ideas for you:

  • Instead of piling your pots, pans, and lids in a heap within a cabinet, consider installing special separators to keep them upright. You could also install hooks to hang your pots and pans (and keep their lids in the space beneath) Or, a dishwasher-like storage space that pulls out and keeps everything organized (like this).
  • Also consider the storage for your baking sheets, muffins tins, and cutting boards carefully. You might want to install vertical separators so that they can be stored on end.
  • Install a utensil drawer, which pulls out and has several cylinder-shaped storage spaces to store your utensils upright. This is most useful for miscellaneous kitchen tools like whisks, spatulas, and mixing spoons.
